Adoption Update: Spice

Posted in Dogs

0

Spice and her sister, Sugar, were surrendered at a shelter in Kentucky because their owner could no longer afford to care for them. This is when Oporation Ava found about these two sweet girls and they were transported to Pennsylvania by an amazing group of volunteers. Since Spice and Sugar had been together for all their lives we weren’t sure if they could be adopted separately, but they were adopted by two different families and have been doing great! Spice’s new mom and dog buddy love her and she has the life. She loves her Hide a Bee and cuddling up with her new furring sister! Keep checking back for new pictures of Spice and her new life!

Adoption Update: Riley (aka Riesling)

Riley, formerly know as Riesling, was the only little girl pup in a litter of 7 puppies that was rescued from Greenville, NC by Help Save One rescue and taken to Rhode Island for foster care. The very next week, the foster home was flooded and Oporation Ava offered them refuge. Thus the start of the Greenville Gang, a litter of seven adorable mix of german shepherd and boxer. After a long trip from North Carolina to Rhode Island and then to Pennsylvania, the pups were safe and sound! Their next hurdle in life was demox mange, which is not contagious, but takes a lot of medication to clear up. After a many days of treatment, all the puppies were adopted to great families!

Rileywas adopted by a family in Philly and is one happy pup! She  enjoys sights and sounds of the neighborhood; even the SEPTA buses, which frightened her at first. Her family said it’s been pretty amazing to watch her tackle her fears and gain confidence over the past few months. She loves to play fetch, chew on her bone and play tug of war with her rope. Lately her favorite treats are ice cubes because she’s lost almost all her baby teeth and it helps with the teething. She still thinks of herself as a small puppy even though she isn’t. She tries to crawl under the bed, but has a tough time getting out from underneath it now. She is very cuddly and loves belly rubs. Riley makes new friends wherever she goes, and particularly enjoys going to Rittenhouse Square so she can lay down in the grass because she gets lots of pets from people!

Adoption Update: Chester

Posted in Uncategorized

0

Chester is an all gray male cat who was found in a backyard colony in a bad section of Philadelphia. There were many other friendly cats in that yard, including some of the other cats that were up for adoption through our partnership rescue, the PCCC. Some horrible people shot cats with BB guns there and let dogs attack them. Thankfully someone that lives in that neighborhood is kind to the cats and feeds and cares for them. This kindness saved these cats lives. After being rescued, Chester was vetted and fixed and brought to an adoption center, but an abscess was discovered behind his ear and he had to be pulled. He was taken to the vet to get checked out and he fully recovered. He is such a lover boy and no mean bone in his body. This boy is handsome with a strong muscular body; like a lifeguard’s.  His fur is soft as velvet and he is a snuggler and loves to strike a pose for you for the camera.

Chester now has a great home with a buddy! He was adopted by a great couple that already had a cat at home. They originally tried to rename him Onomatopoeia, but his new dad and Chester have absolutely fallen in love and he started calling him Fry, for whatever reason and it stuck. Fry loves this new family and gets all the attention and love he needs.

Woof, previous name Doc, was one of the little male pups that was rescued from Greenville, NC by Help Save One rescue and taken to Rhode Island for foster care. The very next week, the foster home was flooded and Oporation Ava offered them refuge. Thus the start of the Greenville Gang, a litter of seven adorable mix of german shepherd and boxer. Their next hurdle in life was demox mange, which is not contagious, but takes a lot of medication to clear up. After a many days of treatment, all the puppies were adopted to great families!

Woof was adopted by a family in Philadelphia. They sent us an update on how he was doing in his new family life. Doc is now named “Woof” and is growing so fast!  He’s quite the rambunctious puppy!  He loves playing with our neighbor’s dog – they go to each other’s back step to let each other know when they’re out – and has learned to sit, shake, and lay down.  He is incredibly gentle with our 3 year old, but they sure do have energy levels that match!  Here is a recent picture of our pup playing on the beach and more family pictures to come!

Adoption Update: Buster

Buster was one of the little male pups that was rescued from Greenville, NC by Help Save One rescue and taken to Rhode Island for foster care.

Buster was adopted by a family and their dog in Philadelphia. They sent us an update on how he was doing in his new family life. He loves taking  naps on the couch, which he just learned to jump onto. Buster loves playing in the dog park and tug of war with his furry brother, Peppy. His best trait is he gives kisses and trying to eat as many treats as you can give him. This pup is really affectionate with everyone and likes to hide under the bed when he is in trouble! He still thinks he is a small dog and gets stuck in places where he thinks he can fit. His family is really happy to have him in their home. He has even been able to play a bit with his brother, formerly known as Shiloh-also one of the Greenville Gang. Look out for Buster on the streets of Philly and he might give you a big wet kiss!

Woody’s Story

Posted in Dogs

0

We recently adopted our second blind pug, Woody.  Only he tell his story, so here it is:

Hi!!  I’m Woody.  I’m a very handsome black pug.  Don’t let my grey beard fool ya, I’m 8 years young.

When I was younger, my owner had other big dogs that lived with me.  I don’t think they liked me very much.  They use to pick on me.  That’s how I lost one eye and injured my other one leaving me blind.  My owner turned me over to Southeast Pug Rescue and Adoption (SEPRA).  I moved to into a foster home in Florida.  I really liked my foster home.  There were four other pugs there & my foster Mom use to make all of us homemade treats.

I was in my foster home for almost a year.  Then at the end of May 2010, a really nice couple in Philadelphia, PA said they wanted to adopt me!!!  This made my foster Mom very happy, but sad too.  So my new Dad flew to Florida and we drove all the way home to Philadelphia!  (By the way, I love car rides!!)

I arrived at my forever home on May 27th.  Guess what?  There was another Puggy living there and she is blind like me!!  This made me happy.  I am hoping that we will become good friends. I keep hearing my Mom and Dad talk about Tiger the cat.  Sometimes I’ll feel her come near me, but if I turn around real quick, she runs away.  I think she’s scared of me.  But that’s ok, maybe in time she’ll be my friend too.

I’ve been home for a little while now and let me tell you that my Mom and Dad are very proud of me.  In not time I learned to navigate around my new home without bumping into things and I know where the front door is so I can let them know when I need to go out.  I even go up and down steps easily too.  My pug sister is scared to go down steps.  I hope she lets me help her learn to go down the steps.  Going down steps isn’t as bad as it seems.

Well it is time for me to take a nap.  Maybe if Mom and Dad let me on the computer again, I will give you an update on how I am doing.  Till then…

THE BLIND PUG

Posted in Dogs

0

“Why would you adopt a blind dog?”  It is the first question we hear when people hear about our pug, Cassidy.  The better question is; “Why not adopt a blind dog (or cat for that matter)?”  They are just as loving and playful as any other pet.

Here is the short version of Cassidy’s story.

In the middle of September 2009 Twinkie (now Cassidy) was rescued from a puppy mill in Georgia were she was a brood bitch. This meant that she lived in a very tiny cage and produced puppies as often as she could. The wire grate flooring left her with splayed feet.  While in the puppy mill Twinkie developed a condition know as Pigmentary Keratitis (PK).  This went untreated and as a result she is now totally blind. When Twinkie could no longer produce puppies she was turned over to a rescue group in Georgia.  She soon moved to New York state and a foster mom from Precious Pug Rescue and Adoption (PPRA).  Here she was spayed, brought up to date on vaccinations and was ready for adoption.

My fiancée, Rachel, found Twinkie on the petfinder.com.  We talked about the pros and cons of bringing a blind dog into our household.  We read and researched how to live with a blind pet and decided that we could provide Twinkie with a good home and give her the love, care and support she needed and missed in life until now.  Being a puppy mill rescue, we truly don’t know how old she is.  But we decided that if she is with us for 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months or 6 or more years, she will be well loved and enjoy life.

A few years ago I had fostered and successfully placed a Pug in a forever home for PPRA.  I contacted one of my friends who still works with PPRA and told her that we were interested in adopting Twinkie.  We went through the adoption process, were approved and made arrangements meet Twinkie and her foster parents.  Everything at the meeting went well and Twinkie came home with us.  She was also renamed Cassidy.

When Cassidy came home, she was very timid and shy.  She did not run or shun our affection.  To our surprise, Cassidy quickly learned her way around her new home and most importantly she knew where her food and water bowls were kept.   When Cassidy was living with her foster parents, they used key words to help navigate her way around and would use them to try to prevent her from bumping into things.  The word they used the most was “wall”  Needless to say, “wall” was the most used word in our home too.  Before long, and without us really realizing it, Cassidy was barely bumping into walls and furniture

There were two things still missing.  First, was we never heard her bark.  Secondly, she didn’t seem interested in any of the toys we bought for her.  About a month went by and one night as we were getting her dinner ready, she finally barked.  It was at that time that we realized that Cassidy was finally comfortable in her forever home.  Shortly thereafter she began to play with some squeaky toys.  This made us very happy.

Some people might ask. “how can a blind dog play with toys”?  Well, we keep all of her toys in one area.  She knows where they are.  She carries them around and will occasionally leave them laying on the floor.  If she looses her toy, she will put her nose to the floor & she won’t stop searching for her toy until she finds it.  She is very determined.   One time without us realizing it, a squeaky ball rolled under the sofa.  Cassidy would squat down and paw at the sofa.  She would constantly pace back and forth too.  She was trying to tell us that there was a toy under the sofa, but we didn’t listen.  We tried repeatedly to get her to stop pawing at the sofa.  Sometimes Cassidy would play with a different toy but she always went looking under the sofa.  A few days later and out of our own curiosity we decided to look under the sofa.  To our amazement, there was Cassidy’s squeaky ball.  We felt silly for not listening to her.  Cassidy definitely knows her toys and where she left them too.

We have had Cassidy for six months now.  Cassidy has grown so much.  She went from a shy and timid puppy mill survivor to a very confident, sweet loving and playful Pug.  To be honest, we don’t even think about her being blind anymore.  She gets around really well.  Occasionally she’ll bump into things, especially if she is playing and chasing after her toys; but we don’t think anything of that, neither does Cassidy lol  Nothing will stop her from chasing after and getting her toys lol

We have had the joy and privilege of being able to provide Cassidy with a warm, safe and loving forever home.  Cassidy has taught us that blind dogs aren’t much different from dogs that are able to see.  Although Cassidy she can’t see, the love and trust is unconditional.  The saying is true, “Blind Dogs See With Their Heart”

Humpty on the Road to Recovery

Humpty is looking fabulous, he will be ready for adoption & his forever home in about a month.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so I will let you all gaze in amazement at his AFTER photos. All I can say is WOW!!!!

NEW HUMPTY PHOTOS ARE HERE: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46742915@N08/sets/72157623342219417/

Dr. Fly is a miracle worker, look at how great he looks. His bad is a tad bit droopy, but other than that you can hardly tell. Once all his hair grows back you will never know.

We are starting the search for Humpty’s FURever PRRfect home. This will need to be a non-smoking home, preferrable no other pets. Although Humpty gets along great with other dogs, and so wants to rough house and play, he will need to live in a home where he won’t risk injury and bump his head. He will be highly suseptable to sinus infections that could lead to brain or upper respiratory so he needs a sterile clean home where he can be pampered and doted on for the rest of his life.

Email me at rguidara@earthlink.net if you are interested in adopting Humpty.

Oporation Ava’s Greenville Gang

Posted in Uncategorized

Here are the puppies in the shelter in NC.

Wait until you all see the puppies that will soon be available for adoption through Oporation Ava! They were born on February 1, 2010. There are 6 boys and 1 girl, poor thing stuck with all of those boys. They are an adorable mix of shepherd and boxer. The momma dog’s owner did not want them. So, shortly after they were born, they were dropped off at Animal Care Services in Greeneville, NC, a shelter with one of the shortest holding periods on the eastern seaboard. There they were wormed and examined and given their first puppy shots. They were pulled right before their last day in the shelter by Help Save One rescue and taken to Rhode Island for foster care. The very next week, the foster home was flooded.

Oporation Ava previously worked with Help Save One when they needed help feeding their rescued pups, so we donated food so they could all eat. Oporation Ava offered to foster and care for these 7 puppies until their adoption here in PA. In the very very early morning hours of April 22, 2010, they came to us and got cleaned up and some much needed rest. This afternoon they are moving to Doggie Style’s Passyunk store where they will get to play in the old doggie daycare area. Next week on they will receive more shots and have another deworming. Three are already neutered. The rest will be done in the next 2 weeks.

After all of their vetting is done, they will be available for adoption to great new homes. The adoption donation is $300 which covers rescue, transport, food, foster, veterinary care, including spaying and neutering, and microchipping. Any funds left will be used to help rescue more dogs and cats and help pay for life saving surgeries for sick dogs and cats.

Come to to the store at 1700 E. Passyunk to meet them and see them play. Come back here soon to see the individual pups and their new pictures and profiles!
